Instead of London, I decided to take flight in the opposite direction, boarding a bus for the Norfolk coast. After more than three hours, I arrived at Holkham Bay - a beach so flat it is possible to walk for miles without the sea rising above your ankles…. (the inrushing tide is like water spreading evenly over a glass surface.)

In summer, the vast skies are extraordinary (soft and enveloping) and yet in winter, it is hard to imagine anywhere more desolate. When overcast, the border between beach and sky dissolves, and you have the impression of walking into an abyss. Towards the end of the day, I experienced an awful moment when I found myself miles from the shore, exhausted, and with nothing visible but grey.
